Interwoven to the island’s maritime tradition, the Shipyard or Boatyard first appeared in the mid-19th century to the south of the harbor, adjacent to the island’s large dockyard “Neorio” due to the smooth slope of the terrain which allowed the hauling and launching of small boats and larger over the years. Greece always had an advantage due to its geographical location as a hub of the three large seas thus featuring an abundance of shipyards including that of Syros which was a freight traffic harbor also working as a ship repair unit. Until today both the Boatyard of Mavrikos and George’s careening area as known from the very old times continue the long shipbuilding tradition with new modernized equipment.
