The Municipal Theatre of Apollo is a work of art that testifies to the cultural development of Ermoupolis. Built in 1864 on Vardaca Square in the city center by Italian architect Pietro Sampo, it bears architectural influences from Italian and French culture, and is often simulated with a miniature of the Milan Staircase.
It is a two-storey building that externally at least is characterized by a modest architectural design with marble at the base, vertical axes, apron, cornice, arched and rectangular windows as predominant elements. But the interior of the theater will certainly leave visitors with their mouths open.
Originally the interior of the theater consisted of a 9×10 meter stage, wooden seats, handrails and velvet curtains. After the damage suffered during the Second World War, the theatre had lost all its glamour. From 1970 until 2000 it began to be reconstructed based on the plans of Petros Pikionis and was reopened for the first time in 2002. Today, as one of the most impressive cultural centers of the Cyclades, the Municipal Theatre of Apollo hosts a multitude of cultural events and festivals.
